Personal note: I am doing my first full Ironman triathlon in April. I’m raising money for WaterAid, to provide the billions who lack access to it with the clean water I will be gulping as I swim 3.8km, bike 180km, and run 42.2km! Please click the link! https://t.co/m6JMiJozft

Just obsessively typing "[state]" + "county" + "2020" into this website looking for some crumbs of low-quality information to break the tension

IN MY DAY we didn't have all this incel malarkey, we just wore a lot of black clothing and obsessed over the NME letters page

@rob_cyran Also the rinderpest epidemic of the 1890s and the scramble for Africa, just astonishing stuff

@rob_cyran Learning about the absolutely pivotal role of yellow fever in colonial Latin America and the Caribbean was one of the most 🤯 I have ever read.

@laurimyllyvirta Or could this still be start-up issues with Baihetan etc? My understanding is that whole stream of dams was running at full capacity now.

-
@laurimyllyvirta What on earth is going on with hydro? All that rainfall has to go somewhere, and if it was being saved behind dams to manage winter loads you would have expected some sort of policy announcement to precede such a drastic change.

There is actually a good reason for this, "manger le vache enragée" ("reduced to eating the meat of rabid cows") is a French idiom for destitution and poverty. Still makes me laugh.

TIL the first French edition of George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" was titled "The Angry Cow"

@yuanyi_z By that metric, Ceausescu-era Romania, by building the biggest political HQ in history, became the world’s most well-functioning government 🫣

@totalguff @fesshole @StuartMaconie I would love to take credit but I think the rumour was already well circulated by the time I wrote that!
